Scientists says that they've discovered why women like pink - and it's all to do with foraging for food.
Scientists in Britain think they might have found an evolutionary explanation for why women like the colour pink - and why men prefer blue. They say that in pre-historic times, women were the foragers and needed to be able to search efficiently for berries and fruits. Ripe fruits and berries tend to be reddish/pink in colour (think of raspberries, strawberries, cherries, plums and redcurrants) - so women evolved to zone in on them and prefer them to other shades.
And why are men meant to prefer blue? Well, the scientists speculate that it's because they were hunters. Can't work out the connection? It's all to with reading the weather apparently. Clear blue skies mean good weather - so those pre-historic men would have a better chance of catching themselves a mammoth - or brontosaurus or whatever else they hunted.
But it doesn't quite compute does it? Many early varieties of apple, for example, are still green when ripe; blackberries -the name's a clue - are black when ripe, as are damsons and elderberries. And if you eat a red mulberry you'll find it very sour - it's the deep almost black ones that are sweet.
And why wouldn't women be just as zoned in to the weather as men? After all, foraging for berries in the bucketing rain is probably going to be less successful than doing so on a lovely sunny day. And wouldn't pre-historic male hunters have set off searching for prey at dawn or dusk, when animals are at their most active? A time of day when skies aren't exactly blue.
Of course theories that link our characteristics to our evolution are always interesting. However, this one doesn't address the fact that chocolate - possibly more attractive to most women than berries - is brown. And beer isn't blue - it's amber. Back to the lab I think.
