Tour Operator Simply Travel offers new eco-holidays on Italian organic farms.

Tour Operator Simply Travel is now offering eco-friendly holidays at three organic working farms in Italy.

They’ve picked three properties – Casa Di Botro and Le Carolee hotels in Calabria, and the Villa Dafne in Sicily, all of which are involved in the small scale production of food in Italy.

Each property is off the beaten track and while you’re there you’ll be able to sample fresh local food and explore the countryside. You might also be able to try your hand at cookery – or make some olive oil.

Le Carolee Hotel is in Pianopoli, Calabria. This region is noted for dishes such as ndjua – a spicy sausage often used in pasta sauces; and sagne chine – a strange sounding lasagne that’s made with artichokes and meat balls.

The hotel looks like an old castle and specialises in organic food – such as Calabrian home grown fruit, vegetables, cheese and wine. You’ll even get the chance to try making your own olive oil.

La Casa Di Botro Hotel is in Botricello, also in Calabria. It’s a family run hotel in a renovated farmhouse in a National Park – so great for walkers. It’s also close to the town of La Castella. The restaurant also specialises in traditional Calabrian dishes.

Agriturismo Villa Dafne is in Alia, on Sicily. Sicilian cuisine has a strong North African influence and fish and seafood feature frequently. You might find dishes like pesce spada alla ghiotta, swordfish steaks in a tomato sauce served with potatoes, olives and capers, or pasta ‘ncasciata, which contains meatballs, hard-boiled egg and sausage. There are plenty of delicious desserts too, such as Cannoli , which is ricotta wrapped in pastry and then dipped in chocolate.

The hotel uses lots of fresh vegetables – and you might get the chance to try some of Nonna – grandmother – Giovanna’s cooking.
